As reported in the latest issue of Journal of Infectious Diseases ( January 15, 2006), MRSA is a growing problem in the United-States. About 2 millions people carry this bacteria in their nose as estimated by the CDC (Center for Diseases Control- Atlanta). New antibiotics are needed to tackle this bacteria that may cause severe damages. But new antibiotics even if necessary creates new problems –
Antibiotic overuse creates situations ripe for "survival of the fittest."( Dr. Denise Cardo, director of health care quality at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Rather than killing all bacteria, the drugs destroy only the weakest. Bacteria continue to grow hardier and can prove fatal. Actually, a vaccine-based approach should be a better long term solution. Several companies are working on these vaccines. For more info on MRSA |
