ON May 23rd, 2008, the French Ministry of Health launched a national hand cleanliness campaign targeting health care workers, patients, and the general public. The campaign emphasizes that proper hand hygiene is the key element in preventing and controlling nosocomial infections.
It is critical that a through cleansing of one’s hands with a liquid alcohol solution containing an emollient to protect the skin precedes all health care treatments, no matter where they are carried out. All health care establishments throughout the country should see to it that these solutions are available at patient’s bed. Health care workers would also be required to carry a small bottle of disinfectant in the pockets of their uniform. |

The Canadian Patient Safety Institute is finally launching a campaign to promote
better hand hygiene in canadian hospitals. Unfortunately, Quebec is not part
of this campaign. ADVIN has asked the Quebec Ministry of Health to launch such a
campaign. Belgium, Switzerland, United-Kingdom and other European countries have
already done such national campaigns. They are not the only answer to nosocomial
infections: other measures are necessary, such as patient isolation, antibiotic
therapy control and more. But studies throughout the world have largely proven
that hand hygiene remains a very basic measure and, when strictly applied, it has a
direct positive effect. Strict hand hygiene measures reflect a positive attitude towards
patient security, and this is the main cultural change that must be implemented in our hospitals.
