Hospital-associated infections are on the rise in Canada, as well as in the rest of the world. They are now the 4th cause of death in Canada and the costs for treating them put a heavy burden on our Health system. Ontario has developped a pilot project to better prevent and control these infections: «we can do far better» says Dr Michael Gardam, who leads this initiative.
The project started with 10 hospitals and is now extended to 30. «The bug-fighting approach places the onus on front-line staff. They are nasty drug-resistant bacteria that haunt hospital hallways, infecting thousands and killing an estimated 12,000 Canadians annually, and now a new initiative aims to put the squeeze on superbugs.»
