Each day, 250 Americans die as a result of such infections ( 8000 deaths/year estimated in Canada), and cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or taking immunosuppressive drugs are especially susceptible to HAIs. Even when not fatal, these infections complicate the management of conditions that are already difficult to treat and can extend a person's hospital stay.»
