BELIEFS ABOUT HAND HYGIENE: A SURVEY IN MEDICAL STUDENTS IN THEIR FIRST CLINICAL YEAR.

E-mail Print

Source: American Journal of Infection Prevention - In Germany, Medical students were asked regarding knowledge and beliefs on hand hygiene before entering the clinical phase of education. Only 21% knew the correct indications for hand disinfection. Regardless of previous experience in hospitals, the medical students expected that the compliance towards hand hygiene would be worse in more experienced physicians and senior consultants—who are often considered to be role models for medical students.

In 2007, a study at the CUSM, Montreal Hospital University Center, gave the same kind of results: only 25% of doctors and 50% of nurses practice the necessary hand hygiene before touching a patient. In other countries, studies have demonstrated the same pitiful results. It should be reminded that hand hygiene remains the key protection measures to avoid germ transmission.
